The XML Information Set[1] identifies a scheme of interpreting XML
structures into pieces of information (aka Information Items).
It currently presents the de facto way of viewing that information as a
part of the "XML Core" standards.

For a W3C spec, it's rather easy to read too. It just formalizes the
*common view* of an XML document.
