This is sly, but not sly enough :-)
The entire subtext of HLink is as a replacement for XLink. That is how it has
been pushed by the HTML WG. It has to have been so, because if not, there
would have been a flood of complaints that the WG was balkanizing the linking
space.
The WG could easily have developed a better solution, and still couched it in
terms of XHTML. This would satisfy the letter of the charter, and at the same
time help justify the abandonment of XLink.
