The way I see it, it's quite simply the chance to define a document format that 
fits within the space that (X)HTML has been occupying (which is clearly an 
interesting space) but without the burden of backwards compatibility. In other 
words, it's the chance to "get HTML right".

The benefit I would personally reap from it is that I could at last stop having 
to define my own vocabulary(ies) to strike a nice balance between XHTML 1.0 and 
DocBook, and instead use something standard that other people understand and can 
easily manipulate.

It's probably too early to tell.
