I am trying to keep x81 as a char (similar to some char 'a') but it failed. 
What is your IE version? I have test with IE 6.0 it was failed to open the doc.
I have corrected the xml file and attached.

The document you attached is not well formed. You have this:
 
<logfile lineno=800 pos=8> U:\cw\bugz\113194\cwnz20030304_141.xml </logfile>
 
You need quotes around the attribute values:
 
<logfile lineno="800" pos="8"> U:\cw\bugz\113194\cwnz20030304_141.xml </logfile>
The parser may not have reported that to you if you really used this:
 
#x81
 
instead of this:
 
&#x81;
 
My version of IE shows a square, so I must not have whatever encoding that is from, but it parses just fine when I make these corrections to your file.

I tried to load an XML which has #x81 character as part of one XML node value. ( I have attached the sample XML file as an attachment.)
But MSXML parser and IE6.0 failed to load that document with xml version 1.0 and gave an error messgae says "An invalid char found in 
xml file." that pointed to #x81 char, but according to BNF notation #x81 is valid char. 
Does anybody have any clue why MSXML parser failed to load this document?
