A lot, actually. One of the key promises XML made was easy access to
information, with less if not no vendor lock-in.
If you take Frank's reading about avoiding the dangerous word
"ownership" and simply talk about the difficulties of accessing
information you've created with a given tool using a different tool set,
there's plenty here to think about, for both vendors and consumers.
There are other approaches beside XML you can use, notably POI (Poor
Obfuscation Implementation) - http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/.
XML's a lot friendlier about letting you pick your own toolkit, of
course.
