my take is that tim's suggesting one tool can't do all - taking the farm
analogy a bit farther - spned some time out there and you'll see that
everything has to be fixed with a welder, screw driver, or fencing tool.
even if what's needed is a spanner, pliers, hammer, or spade.
and that's a bit how software is at the moment. .NET or .COM or a
browser (and let's not discuss the pollution of HTML by IE) or java or
XML is the total answer.
well i see it like tim does (almost) - input, output, and processing.
output can mostly be done by the browser, but to be honest the
difficulty of getting good printed output from browsers means that
spreadsheets in the browser are pretty good; processing is not as
automated as it should be and a lot of my work develops tools for
automated processing within and between machines - hence my interest in
xml; input is far more interesting - i've tried many approaches (for
traditional data processing) and found that low volume data entry works
just as well on browsers as anything else, but high volume still works
best through a well designed terminal interface connected directly to
the database. i've even had users insist that i replace with browser
with the terminal interface where speed and data volumes are critical
(!).
on my farm i keep a good toolbox with all the right tools for each job
and life is much easier. in my software development i keep a wide range
of tools to meet each need with an appropriate tool/interface.
the real point? like tim i get really suspicious of anyone offering one
size fits all software tools and platforms.
