Yes, it was.  

Type assignment, like everything else, has it's trade-offs.

What it buys you:
1) reliable round-tripping of documents (where originating processes are
down-chain consumers as well)
2) a better understanding of the intent of the author
3) information for automated data binding 

What it costs you:
1) more complex processing (x10, I think)
2) document component baggage
3) higher intellectual capital investment (or tool investment)

Others may care to add to or critique the above lists.  There's nothing
purely evil in the world, nor any good without a little tarnish.  That can
be a little hard to remember for those of us who deal with 1's and 0's all
day long.  Choose your poison.
