You're absolutely right about stylesheets. But I think part of the problem is that the UBL folks have a vision of being able to use the documents "as-is" without transformation. Of course, they could always provide transforms from a <UDEF_2_3_4> etc syntax into something readable (which might be a good idea for doing language translation).
People I've talked to who worked at Commerce One on xCBL and who've been around a while have told me that using codes for tag names has been thought about before. But that when you're dealing with thousands and thousands of tags, where semantics are unclear for a small percentage (How often would you be confused with <BuyerParty>?), using codes in the tags is nearly impossible to maintain.
Of course, EDI gets away with it, so maybe I'm wrong.

i dunno. if UDEF_9_5_8 is right, i'd rather come back in twenty years to a
mountain of data which i _knew_ had that in it. if it's not, then why the fuss
- where's the grounds for authority?
