There's a big problem in that word "using". The number of developers
whose software touches XML at some point has grown tremendously, while
the number of developers working explicitly on the XML side of those
projects seems pretty stable to me.
(From a book sales perspective, XML is now a "mature" market.)

Everything I've seen in the past felt statistically suspect. Michael
Leventhal had a nice discussion in his Extreme presentation about how
interplay between vendors and analysts seems to drive those ever-upward
curves about adoption. I'm not sure what would qualify as a good source
of information; personally I find conferences a critical source of
admittedly anecdotal but very helpful information.
