>I am willing to be proven wrong, but I don't see any evidence that any
normal aggregator users are asking for a checkbox in their aggregator
that distinguishes between "new" and "updated". Does anyone have
feature requests they can use to back up the claim?

No, but normal aggregator users want to be told when a post has been
updated. Considering that it is HIGHLY unlikely that updating an old
blog post or news entry will alter its publication date, a logical
conclusion is that an alternate date with the last modified date would
be the best of both worlds.

This solution satisfies both content producers and content consumers.
The only people who it doesn't satisfy are people who are to lazy to
update their crappy tools.
