For certain activities, for example a model of a hierarchically composed system encoded in XML where the XML encoding follows the containment-denotes-structure pattern, having the tree can be useful. Features such as being able to follow XLinks also aid navigation in large hyperlinked documents. On a smaller scale, for Ant scripts having the structure and the target name visible is useful for navigation.

I'd guess that what is desirable in an 'XML editor' will depend more strongly on the domain of application than anything inherent in XML itself.
