Unfortunately, without the other legs, the IP problems persist. 
Note the Forgent suit over JPEG.  Just as GIFs were liberated as 
the patent ran out, now it's JPEGs.

We can do better, but we have to think our way through this now. 
We can make standards meaningful and liberated.  We may learn 
from the past but we must apply it to the future.

The origin of ISO standards is a mixed bag. Standards such as JPEG and MPEG
were
created by expert groups affiliated with ISO. JPEG, for example, was
originally
an ISO working group, then a joint group (with CCITT).
