I'll mention the Alo and Ali projects.  Their focus is on reducing the 
complexity of code using them, which has advantages.  They also are 
relatively small, mostly because they handle less than the big parsers. 
  But for many controlled cases, that's just fine.

To best understand them, check out the tutorial.  Ali's tutorial 
specifically shows how to write C code to read a RSS feed from Slashdot!
