Thanks David.
I think web services as a means implies looking beyond
hypertext as a model.
As we integrate more functionality at ever
greater scales, two things become evident:
a) To say the web is universal the way the atmosphere is
isn't invalid. To deny that it is a very thin layer is.
b) As the scale increases, sensitivity to other affective
dimensions does as well. The ones that seems to out the
weakness of most designs are time and cost.
The value of an asset is inversely proportional to its
distance in real time from the dispatching event.

People looking for robust and reliable lightweight messaging 'glue'
should also
take a gander at OASIS ASAP implementations.
I believe they also have an open source release too.
