RE: [xml-dev] XLink - anyone using?

[ Lists Home | Date Index | Thread Index ]

The DTD we are using is one that was/is being developed internally (I am
currently in the process of a major revision, and possibly a conversion to
schema).
Right now we have about 3 ways of pointing to document

1) URLs generated from Documentum

2) ID attributes in XML documents. This is the method we use currently in
a different application to link sections from different documents together.
The problem with this is that the author has to check the section out of
Documentum, copy the contents of the ID attribute, and paste it in the
appropriate attribute of the link element. This system is OK for
experienced authors in my department (knowledge management), but by next
year the end users will be modifying their own documents.

3) Docbase ID, with is generated by Documentum for each version of a
document. We can't really use this for linking because as soon as the
document being linked to is changed, the Docbase ID is changed. Then the
linking document would either a) call up and outdated version of the
document or b) throw an error.

So this is the way the system works today. BUT there is some serious
discussion about creation and XML database, which may require a whole
different linking solution.........

>My question is this: Is anyone using XLink?

XBRL uses some XLink, SVG uses a little bit, and that's about it.

>How useful do you find it?

XLink provides some nice constructs to help you model the relationships,
but
using it won't buy you anything in terms of automation or ease of use when
plugging in tools, which is usually the main reason to use a standard.

>What implementations are out there?

These days, virtually none. I wrote something about how little XLink was
used almost three years ago at
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/03/13/xlink.html and there's been little
progress since.

Are you using an internally developed DTD or a public one that we might
have
heard of, like DocBook? Also, how solid of a way to refer to a specific
document do you have? I assume
that "document #335" is just something you made up for an example; is there
an intranet URI or some other internal identifier that can unambiguously
point to a specific document so that a processing system can find it? For
each output medium that those documents will be converted to, can these
identifiers be converted to identifiers that work in that medium? (e.g.
whether or not the internal identifiers are URIs, can then be converted to
URLs when the documents are converted to HTML?)

Subject: [xml-dev] XLink - anyone using?

I am a newbie to the list and I would like to say hi!

My question is this: Is anyone using XLink?
What implementations are out there?

Background: I am work for a big aerospace company and we are converting
all
out procedures from Framemaker to XML. Everything is stored in Documentum.
These procedures have tons of links: Links to other procedures, links to
MS
Office documents, but mostly, links to other sections in the same
procedure.

We have our Documentum XML application set up so that each section is a
chunk. Therefore, we can't use an internal (IDREF) linking mechanism when
linking between sections. So, I am trying to figure out what the best
method of linking between sections would be. I am also looking at linking
between sections in other documents (i.e. document #331 section 3 has a
link
to document #335 section 5).

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
