I see the spirit of XML Schema as being both control *and* flexibility -
the second also often being necessary in real-world implementations. Not
sure how many advanced XML users you believe are confused by this, and
who they may be.

However, perhaps the section on anyType in W3C Schema Primer Part 0[1]
might provide additional clarifications.
