One possibility is that the stylesheet starts with a byte-order-mark. The
specs and most products originally didn't allow a BOM at the start of a
UTF-8 XML document, but they have gradually moved in the direction of
allowing it.
Of course, there must be some difference between your two configurations,
but if you can't find it then I certainly can't.
