Lessons learned from recent projects and what of 2007?

Just to underline a couple of points I've learned from my projects
and what they might lead to me pleading for in 2007...

1. Pro XML: the business benefit of changing the model and
just regenerating without changes needed to the applications
except at the point where there is advantage to be taken from
the change - this seems to be achievable to the extent the
'freeb-ubl', 'xslt4xforms' and 'xforms4ubl' projects show

2. Con XML: the actual technologies themselves for doing this
are still at an early stage of development and very limited in
functionality and actual delivery of their potential and promise

So these two have to be weighed at a fundamental level when
applying the technologies of XML, such as XSLT and XForms.

I'd personally think the benefits are starting to outweigh the
downsides but there is great room for improvement. Key to
my projects in particular is perhaps improvement in the
XForms standard (I'd like to see, for instance, support for real,
complex schemas in validation requirements and suppression
of nulls - empty elements and attributes - just by setting an
attribute value, say, on the submission or instance) and
speeding of adoption of these improvements in browsers, etc.
And if browsers don't support all this then equivalent
improvements to these capability levels in what they do support.

How much of this can happen in 2007? If a lot then 2007 could
be a year of very wide economical benefit from adoption, I think,
plus very interesting developments in technology and systems.

All the best

Many thanks, sounds great,

I've just started some XForms opensource projects,
one a subproject to freebXML.org for royalty-free
stuff for the universal business language (plug, plug)
https://sourceforge.net/projects/freeb-ubl
and there's lots of XForms in it just begging for more
features (some being pretty basic like the need, sort
of, to remove empty elements - and validation). The
XForms are generated with XSLT from sample instances
so look a bit boring (need some nice CSS). The key
thing is they can be regenerated when the XML of the
UBL is customized and the idea is that no manual work
is needed beyond that - a proof of the XML concept,
as it were. I just need to make it all work nicely so folk
out there doubting the benefits of XML compared to
the overheads will fall over in amazement rather than
fall around laughing :-) More importantly perhaps is
the potential of small business use and benefits to
economies of course.

All the best

I've also just created a new forum -

XFORUM: The XForms Community Forum, at
http://24.108.197.22/~xforms/smf/index.php,

and am reactivating my XForms.org site:

http://www.xforms.org

after the last couple of months of dealing with my wife's health issues.

If you are interested in helping to promote and spread the word on XForms
(or are looking for information, though it's a bit early for that), I
eagerly welcome you to the site.
