Long reply: Yes, and you can even make films with game engines.

Machinima, that is using a comercial game engines to make movies.
Game engines provide a framework for acting... Actors are human people
that connect to the game server and play a role. Theres functionality
to save and reproduce the films, know has "demo" files. And the
playback can run on a existing installation base, the people that
already bought the game that include the engine you use. Game
resolutions can be 1024x768, so is yet another HD content. And again
the most important factor is not technology, but what you do with it,
and storytellers is a critical resource.
As a bonus, demo files are small, and a 40MB zip demo file can result
on 4 hours long movie. This is important feature on internet, because
you want people to download non-large files, to watch "off-line".

Short one: No.

You want to reuse knogment and models. Create a fundation and a BIG
community, because 3D is hard (thats a good concept) and need
workforce, and storytellers. On the long term X3D /may/ be better.
Because you will not need to reset after every proyect, but your stuff
will grown with the community. Game communitys are temporal. Maybe
the better machinima is "Blahbalicious", but nowdays very littel
people can watch it the way whas intended.
