No XML Binaries? Buy Hardware

If XML has such a negligible impact on performance, why do companies like
Cisco and IBM buy small companies that build XML hardware accelerators?
I accept that one wants to find out what the bottlenecks are, but I can't
accept that companies this big spending this much money haven't.
