hmm, maybe the move towards (increasing) textual representation is a
function of increasing processing power, related to the move towards
interpreted languages, related to the move towards distributed
resources.

What binds them, that they are more efficient when the need for
processing speed is no longer the bottleneck?

I realize the above is a very strongly worded, impossibly broad
statement based not on hard data but on a feeling.
