Well, for the record, the 6+ choices that I posted were based on these subjective considerations:

-          languages in large-scale use in government applications

-          languages which are the subject of many books

-          languages which are building blocks for larger systems or APIs

-          languages for which new developers wouldn’t find it difficult to justify attending a course

-          languages with which many XML developers are familiar

-          languages that are frequent presentation topics at conferences
