In broad terms, FpML is widely used by banks and financial organisations
which trade in financial derivatives, which is the part of financial
trading that FpML is designed to address. It is used for trade and
pre-trade messaging.
The binary FIX format (and sometimes the equivalent FIXml XML format) are
used for pre-trade messaging for equities (stocks), bonds, etc.
SWIFT messages are used for trade confirmation and settlement.
(These are all broad generalisations, not true in all possible cases).
FpML is well received in as much as there is no competing format, and
banks (etc.) use it particular as a basis for their internal XML messaging
(i.e. they extend FpML), as well as using it between organisations
(without the extensions).
Cheers, Tony.
