External subset processing by browsers

I continue to be astonished/frustrated/furious each time I forget and
add a few entity declarations to my everyday document DTD and then
discover that Firefox (3.0.4) blows up on XML which uses the result.
To my surprise Opera (9.62) simply displays the entity reference --
not sure which is worse.
As far as I can tell by reading the bugzilla entry (not for the
faint-hearted!) [1], a fix in Firefox has been stalled by opposition
- From a few individuals, _inter alia_ based on the argument that
supporting the external subset will delay the (to be desired,
apparently) day when XML abandons DTDs. Sigh.
Can anyone confirm what the real current state of play is on this?
At the very least, people who have or are willing to get Mozilla
Bugzilla ids should vote on this bug!
Thanks
