But the size of the parser is a function of the development process more
than the specification. The spec just sets a minimum bound and is no
guarantee that someone's code will be minimal. Indeed, after there are a
few parsers, the value proposition of any parser is the feature support,
such as API support and support for related standards. The market works
against minimalist implementations.
Look at Xerces: absolutely enormous, and much bigger than, say, James
Clarks SP and XP combined.
