I would agree with this assessment whole-heartedly.  I am frequently 
tasked with designing integration software (or software components) and 
the temptation to use XML technologies is significant.  Learning the 
hard way, I have found that large dat loads or high-performance demands 
steer me away from XML and toward strategies similar to the author's.

Defaulting to XML just because it's exciting and new shouldn't blindly 
compel us to use it.  Sounds obvious, but that author's experience is a 
perfect example of the mistake.
