xml + style.

Reading a blog http://is.gd/cWnYc relating to information where the
style|presentation is important for semantics.

Have there been attempts to mix XML with presentational style
beyond HTML? 
I've generally agreed that keeping semantics and style apart is
good for ... whatever, but in some cases that just isn't so.

Any references please?
[I'm excepting(accepting?) ODF MS Word etc ]
