Those are scripting libraries, not browser APIs, as you would typically
understand that term. There have always been scripting libraries, we now
just have an ecosystem where people bother using them and tend to prefer
externally maintained ones over in-house developments, mostly because
there are now more browsers to consider (and as a consequence, browser
vendors update their JavaScript implementations to make libraries less
of a performance problem, and giving library developers more incentive
to maintain and extend their libraries).
