The weird thing was Stylus Studio showed the same tree when I used name= as
ref=!!
Happily giving me the visual indication that I had it right ...

Time to reproduce and report a bug I guess

Yes, a very common error and one that's difficult to spot, especially as 
the only consequence is that validity errors aren't detected.
