That's a good point David.  But I do believe that a number of XML 
applications communicate via the sea (!!!!) of the Internet and for that 
reason I like to include some namespace information in the XML instances.

Well now you have a cake and want to eat it :) (to streatch the metaphore).
If you want to talk across the sea your no longer an island and all the
issues brought up in this thread regarding compatibility apply.

I don't  think you can have it both ways.
