Size inflation of XML over other text formats is entirely the choice of the vocabulary authors not the XML itself.  I am fine with people who like their own formats ... 
But if they want to try to back that up by claiming its intrinsically XML that necessitates verbosity I have little respect for the argument.

Take a quick look at the link I posted.   As a simple example JSON is NOT intrinsically less verbose.
