One of my mantras these days is that where performance is concerned, the devil is always in the detail. Therefore almost any attempt to categorize workloads is going to have too few dimensions.

One could try and start by characterizing "publishing workflows" versus "message switching applications", but there are still many critical factors that distinguish workloads within these categories.
