I have been having a discussion with a colleague on this topic. I thought it would be useful to share part of our discussion.
[To remind people what the topic is about, we are trying to come up with rules/heuristics on when to use super-simple data formats versus when to use comparatively complicated data formats such as XML or JSON.
Well you could do what most analytics folks do. Take an XML or JSON format and flatten it into something "super-simple" like a table.
If things retain a semblance of simplicity when you try and work with it you're golden.
