you are right. Since compression is one of the reasons why the OASIS
Open Office format makes use of packages. This should be mentioned in
the specification.
I've changed the paragraph in questions as follows:
"As XML has no native support for binary objects such as images, [OLE]
objects, or other media types, and because uncompressed XML files can
get very large, Open Office uses a package file to store the XML
content of a document together with its associated binary data, and to
optionally compress the XML content."
