What is a 'character'? (ODF 1.2, Part 2)

Dear all,

50.5.2 (CODE function) has:

Return numeric value corresponding to the first character of the text value.
----

What is the first character, the first 'Unicode scalar value' or the first logical character? (So if the string is an e followed by a combining acute accent, is the first character an e, or an e-acute - each of which have distinct Unicode code points?)
