Ed. Note I deleted: "An inactive page variable is neither displayed nor increased on each page." I am not even sure what was intended.

Michael Stahl says: "according to Oliver Specht, for an inactive page variable,  a page-variable-get expands to nothing. also, an inactive page variable is not incremented. "
