I thought that had come up already.  Perhaps in OpenFormula.  

There's also the possibility that it is defined by the W3C Schema datatype for string, but I am guessing.  

I am pretty certain it did come up in the work up to CD06 though.

OK, See OFFICE-3002.  The alphanumeric comparison is plain string comparison.  The interesting case is when some or part of a value is numeric and the desire is to treat the comparison as numeric (so that "10" comes after "9" which it won't in string comparison.
