Sorry I missed the call this morning - woke up with a cold.
Did Edge Side Includes (ESI) http://www.esi.org come up at all in the 
discussion of caching?
The standard identifies some optional markup that defines things like 
time-to-live for fragments within it.

Probably more an issue for the markup subgroup, but applies to protocol too.
