| The interface (calling conventions) by which an application program
| accesses another service (like the operating system). An API
| provides a level of abstraction between the application and the
| other service.
This works for me. We might also want to take out the "(like the OS)"
parenthesis, and instead add a new sentence at the end:
The services accessed through APIs are generally software modules
implementing some functionality used by the application or it can be
the operating system.
