Ok, with the further revision:
API: The interface (calling conventions) by which an application program
accesses another service. An API provides a level of abstraction between
the application and the other service. The services accessed through
APIs are generally software modules implementing some functionality used
by the application or it can be the operating system.
A chorus of +1's, cheers, or other signs of affirmation are acceptable. ;-)
