Michael, I understand your and Eike's example to show that the relative range is interpreted relative to the table:base-cell-address (which must be absolute), not with respect to the current cell (current with respect to the use of the name)

i.e I want to define "leftthree" to refer to the three cells to the right. 
So 
when I am entering =sum(leftthree) in the cell .E6 it calculates effectively .B6+.C6+.D6
when I am entering  =sum(leftthree) in the cell .X8 it calculates effectively .U8+.V8+.W8

In your examples, the expression is always calculated relative to the table:base-cell-address which is is stated to be absolute so I can't appear to be able to define such a "leftthree".

The definition of a name is done for a spreadsheet (ie. inside a table:named-expression inside an office:spreadsheet. But it is used inside an expression entered in various  cells. I am talking about interpreting the expression relative to each cell in which it is used.
