   [SML] Whether to support Attribute or not?

I believe it is now time to address the question of
whether Attribute should be supported in SML or not.

I think it is clear that attributes are needed under
the 'tradition' view of markup where all character
data is considered to be 'content'.  I think this
view is just as dangerous and restricting as the
'sacred main document structure' view.

Unless there are compelling needs for attributes
beyond the need to preserve 'sacred content', I
believe attributes should be removed.  So here is
the question I put to you:

  "Why should attributes be supported in SML?"

In order to keep this thread to a manageable
level of noise, please limit yourself one reason
per message to sub-threads should be created if
necessary to focus on one particular reason per
thread.
