So, what's the problem? It's not custom XML, it's XML application,
MS Media Player uses this application, and it's not quite general
data, but data very specific to this particular application. They
are not supposed to be subject for automated transfer in B2B
multi-tier systems, right? That's what makes XML attractive in the 
first place. You have simple text format for your custom data
and don't care if W3 approved your use of it or not (with _HTML_ it was
different).
Schemas, schemas registration etc. has their place, 
but not here. Or would you prefer Media Player to save these data in
proprietary binary format? :-)
