Perhaps we are working from a different lexicon. In my world, delivery is
different from storage and retrieval and protocols are different from APIs.
By those guidelines, HTTP is a layered, delivery protocol. At a lower level,
you have protocols such as TCP/IP. At a higher level, you can define
XML-based messaging such as SOAP. HTTP defines standard messages such as
POST, but developers use a variety of APIs to emit and consume HTTP.
