"XML-Data" was a schema language proposal made to the W3C in January of 1998
as part of a suggestion that the W3C should charter a schema activity. It
was never implemented in any product, though a subset of it, "XML-Data
Reduced," was implemented in Microsoft XML parsers beginning in late 1998.
Microsoft parsers continue to support this schema notation. (See
http://msdn.microsoft.com/xml/tutorial/author_schema.asp for more details.)
In early 1999 the W3C published requirements for a schema activity. W3C
members (including Microsoft) worked on designing a schema language during
1999 and have now published a tentative design called "XML Schema." You can
read about it at http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-0/,
http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-1/ and http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-2.
Microsoft will support this language in future products.
Regarding similarities and differences, both exist. XML-Data Reduced (XDR)
uses XML instance notation, supports datatypes, open content models,
annotation and the W3C Namespaces specification. XML Schemas (XSD) support
all of these facilities, and adds a tag/type distinction, element
equivalence classes, target namespaces and substantially more elaboration to
many features.

Subject: XDR and XML Schemas
Can anyone comment (or point me to information) on the
similarities/differences between MSXML3 (as in "XML-Data" I believe, and
BizTalk) and the recently published (7 April 2000), W3C Working Draft on XML
Schemas?
Can anyone from Microsoft comment on their intentions with regard to XML
Schemas?
many thanks
Mark
