xml-dev - What does it mean: chronologically less

Reading through the XML Schema specification, I am doubting what
chronologically 
less actually means

is the 10th October 2000 chronologically less or greater than 12th
October 2000  ?

I can imagine an explanation for both variants, so which one is the
right one?
