I second the recommendation to use OmniMark - additionally, if the element
combinations are complex, you might try using SGML instead of XML for the early
passes. You can use the tag omissability rules to save you a lot of context
tracking; end tags could probably all be left off and quite likely, so could
some of the start tags.
