Just for the record, putting my "I told you text encoding was bad!" hat on, I'd
just like to point out that Unicode text is far from universally editable, even
if you stick to ASCII you get the line ending issues.
Viva binary encodings with specialist editors you get as part of the development
kit! Viva la revolution!
