It would be nice if the aspects of the type system which are important
for XPath were extracted from the XQuery context and ratified on their
own. Even better, it would be nice if they were to be described in a
manner which is independent of XML Schemas. That is, on the basis of
generic rules for their declaration and inference. Is it really
imperative that "XQuery 1.0 Formal Semantics" be incorporated as a
normative standard in XPath? Would it not be more appropriate to factor
out a common base?
