For people who are interested, as promised at the Open Publish conference last month,
I have put up a small paper on "Editor's Concrete Syntax (ECS)" at

ECS also was the background of some ideas for the talk at XML Europe this year,
"When Well-Formedness is too much and Validity is not enough".
This is an friendlier alternative syntax for people who can live with the XML information set
but find the XML syntax too strict. It represents the kind of thing that is implemented widely
in colouring text-editors.
A simple transformation can normalize ECS into XML. ECS may be more suited for
XHTML extensions in other namespaces than pure XHTML. It is not suited to
every document type, due to the "amply tagged" restriction.
